Our Venetian carnival masks come directly from the most skilled and experienced masks makers (mascareri) of Venice and are all handmade from papier-mâché. The quality of our papier-mâché masks, leather masks, traditional masks, feather masks, luxury masks, metal masks, decorative masks, blank masks, half face and handheld masks are superb and each Venetian mask is individually finished to the highest standard. The colors and designs follow patterns that are derived from Venetian carnival (carnevale) masks and classical costume disguise, which can be traced as far back as the 13th century. The origins of many of the theatre masks used by the performing characters can be traced back directly to a 16th century form of improvisational theatre known as the Commedia d’arte. These masked characters include the Harlequin (Arlecchino), Puccinella, Nasone, La Bauta and many more. Visitors who are interested in the history of carnevale, venetian style masks and Italian masks may also wish to visit our history page for a more detailed description of the subject.
From our galleries, you are able to make secure payments and purchase authentic Venetian masks and/or classic costumes which reflects your individual personality, changes it or even conceals it. We have designed our website to be user-friendly and easy to use in the hope that it will be a pleasurable experience. We hope that you will enjoy choosing your Venetian masks and that they will invoke an atmosphere of Venetian Carnival that brings you joy and satisfaction.
Each of our Venetian masks are individually designed to be worn as a face mask for all types of fancy dress occasion or used ornamentally to decorate an interior space. After all, Masquerades, Mardi Gras, Carnival and Venice Masked Balls were originally events that were designed to allow the identity of the person to be hidden so that they could interact with other people while incognito, “Man is least himself when he talks in his person, give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth….”, (Oscar Wilde).
